Earlhamites come from many different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Many of us are “multilingual,” which means that we grew up speaking a language other than or in addition to English. Our English Language Learners (ELL) program provides ELL courses at Earlham as well as individualized advising and support. The ELL program supports both international and U.S. multilingual students.
What We Do
In addition to the course offerings for English Language Learners, our ELL instructors also serve as academic and international student advisers. They are also available for consultation with teaching faculty, administrative faculty, and staff across campus. We also host a library of English Language Learning resources that students are welcome to use. One-on-one instruction is offered on an as-needed basis.
Academic Advising for English Language Learners
In academic advising, we assist learners in selecting courses that suit their strengths and help build their skills. We are also available to help mediate academic performance concerns.
During advising we may also refer you to other offices on campus that can provide additional support:
- The Academic Enrichment Center – general tutoring, time management, accommodations for disabilities
- The Writing Center – writing consultations, citation help
- The Quantitative Reasoning Center – tutoring for math and sciences
- Earlham Librarians – research, citation help
- Counseling Services – stress management, personal concerns
- Health Services – health concerns affecting academic performance
Courses
Earlham College offers several courses meant to support English Language Learners during their first year to facilitate their transition to college life.
These courses provide opportunities for students to build their skills in four specific areas:
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking
- Listening
Reading & Writing Courses
Support for reading and writing skills for English Language Learners is built into specific sections of the required first year writing courses: Earlham Seminar I and Earlham Seminar II. These sections are taught by our English language instructors and provide additional emphasis on the writing process in academic English. These courses are meant to support English Language Learners in improving and polishing their current writing skills and to assist learners who have not had extensive writing experience prior to enrolling at Earlham.
Speaking & Listening Courses
During the first year, two courses are offered to support speaking and listening skills for English Language Learners, one per semester.
