Boston: Semester in the City
Location: Boston, MA Experience Type: Career-Discerning Experiences / Grad School Exploration / Off-Campus Program
Semester in the City is a fully-credited fellowship program that gives undergraduate students the opportunity to spend a semester in Boston learning hands-on through well-supported internships in the social sector. Participating students join the program as Social Innovation Fellows and participate in a transformative 15-week program that allows them to address current social issues while developing essential skills and networks that prepare them for life and work after graduation.
During the Semester in the City, students will intern with a nonprofit, social mission business, or government agency for 30 hours per week for a full semester. Students will gain work-based experience and learn more about themselves and their passions, and while also building skills and professional networks. Students are placed in an internship aligned with their interests, be it criminal justice reform, education, gender equality, environmental sustainability, or beyond. A growing list of past and present placement host organizations can be found here. While every placement will be a little different, students will have a dedicated mentor to help them thrive.
This program also includes two courses, which are taught by program staff. Curriculum focuses on social innovation and the social impact sector, and also gives students space and time to reflect on their internship work. Students will learn theory in class and put it to practice at their internship, maximizing their development both inside and outside the classroom.
