Internships & Job Search

Job Search Strategies

  • Schedule an appointment with a Career Coach to review your resume or cover letter, practice interview skills, and discuss your search.
  • Search Handshake for Earlham Network Employers. Earlham Network Employers are employers who have forged a relationship with Earlham and are interested in hiring Earlham students and graduates. Find these employers by filtering for “earlham network employer” under “Labels” in Handshake.
  • Talk to people in your network for new leads and ideas–your Career Coach, Academic Adviser, professors, family members, and friends. Meet with your Career Coach to learn about leveraging LinkedIn, including the alumni search tool.
  • Use discretion when applying for jobs online. Read this list of safety tips to learn more about how to avoid scams in the job search.
  • Tailor your applications. Sending out the same generic cover letter and resume to every organization isn’t a good way to catch an employer’s eye. Research the position and make the case for why you are the best candidate for this specific job.
  • Cast a wide net. Just like when you apply for college or grad school, applying for jobs can be a lengthy process. Try not to get discouraged! Talk to your friends, family, and classmates about what you’re looking for–you never know where a job lead could come from.

When considering a job or internship offer, make sure you think through the following:

Where will I live? What is the cost of living in this location?

How will I get to and from work, the grocery, etc.? Is public transportation an option in this location?

Does the job pay enough/do I have enough funding to cover my expenses for the entire experience? If not, will I need a second job or another source of income?

Will I need a passport or visa to be able to participate in this experience?
